The Shape of Becoming

$2,195.00

Weathering Collection
Original Mixed-Media Sculptural Assemblage
24 × 36 inches | Portrait orientation

Twenty-two reclaimed Pacific oyster shells move outward in an organic spiral across a deep, iridescent navy surface. Genuine copper leaf creates defined geometric spaces beneath them, setting the certainty of straight lines against the unpredictable movement of becoming.

The Story

Life places us inside structures: roles, expectations, identities and carefully drawn boundaries. For a time, they give us shape. Eventually, some become too small for the person we are becoming.

Across the deep navy surface, genuine copper leaf creates a series of defined spaces. Through them, the shells move in a counterclockwise spiral, progressing from the small, luminous centre toward larger outer forms. Their path suggests that transformation rarely happens in order. We circle back, cross old boundaries and encounter familiar places from a changed perspective.

The storm-dark palette carries the emotional language of the Weathering collection. Blues shift between navy, turquoise and pearl, while copper and white emerge through the surface like light after unsettled water. Each shell carries evidence of what has passed over it, but none is defined by that history alone.

What once confined us can become part of the composition. What appeared to be an ending can become another beginning when its context changes.

The Shape of Becoming is not about escaping everything that formed us. It is about carrying those experiences forward without allowing them to determine the limits of who we may become.

Collection

Weathering explores how we are changed by what we endure, what we release and what we carry forward. Storm-dark blues, shifting pearl, copper and flashes of white move across the shells like unsettled water.

The copper represents what remains with us. Not damage, but evidence. A warmth carried forward from everything that has altered us.

These shells have not been returned to what they once were. They have become something that could only exist because of what they have passed through.

Care

Created for indoor display. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture and abrupt temperature changes. Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry brush. Do not use household cleaners or immerse any part of the artwork in water.

Available for collection in Nanaimo or delivery inquiries. Please contact The Painted Oyster to discuss placement and shipping.

Salish Drift

$215.00

The Salish Sea is not one body of water but many — straits, sounds, inlets and passages braided together between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Drift is what happens when you stop navigating and let the current decide. This piece is that surrender. Teal opening into navy, gold threading through without anchoring anything.

The Salish Sea doesn’t have one current. It has dozens, moving in different directions at different depths, and if you stopped your engine and just drifted, you’d end up somewhere unexpected. That’s this shell. Teal breaking into navy, gold threading through like something that can’t quite commit to a direction. The pearl iridescent is doing quiet work here — the shimmer isn’t on the surface, it’s inside the colour. Like bioluminescence. Like something alive in the deep.

Approximately 6" x 8". Wall mounted, ready to hang.

Her Tide, My Tide

$225.00

Two shells, shaped by the same sea, carry their own distinct patterns.

The larger form holds the depth and movement of experience. Beside it, the smaller shell echoes its lines without repeating them, carrying something familiar into a life of its own.

Her Tide, My Tide reflects the bond between mother and daughter. We inherit more than appearance. We carry fragments of one another’s strength, stories, and ways of moving through the world. Our paths may separate, but the current between us remains.

Approximately 9"x9". Wall mounted, ready to hang.
