About The Company
The Painted Oyster began the way many meaningful things do on the West Coast—quietly, and with intention.
It started with a shell.
Not just any shell, but one that had already lived a full life in the waters surrounding Vancouver Island. Textured by tide, shaped by time, and carrying the subtle imprint of the Pacific, it felt too significant to discard. There was something in it—something refined, imperfect, and enduring—that deserved a second life.
What began as a creative experiment at a kitchen table quickly became something more deliberate. The first pieces were made slowly, thoughtfully—layering design, gold edging, and glass-like finishes onto each shell, allowing the natural form to guide the composition rather than forcing it. No two were the same. That was the point.
As pieces began to find their way into homes—and then into boutique spaces—the vision expanded. The Painted Oyster became not just about creating objects, but about elevating overlooked materials into something that feels collected, curated, and quietly luxurious.
Today, each shell is still individually finished by hand. We work with natural oyster shells sourced responsibly, pairing them with refined mixed-media techniques to create pieces that sit somewhere between art and function. They are designed to be held, displayed, gifted, and remembered.
You’ll find them styled in boutique hotels, placed beside a bedside lamp, used to hold jewelry, or resting on a linen table as part of a curated setting. They are small, but intentional—designed to bring a sense of calm, beauty, and West Coast elegance into everyday spaces.
At its core, The Painted Oyster is about transformation.
Taking something shaped by nature—and giving it a second story.
